Nekton are free-swimming animals that move through-out the water column. Squids, most fishes, and marine mammals such as whales and seals are nekton. There are put into three clades, vertebrate, mollusks, and crustaceans.

Benthos are organisms that inhabit the ocean floor. Some benthos, like crabs, sea stars, octopus, and lobsters, move from place to place. Others, like sponges, sea anemones, stay in one place. They're put into many groups by size, by type, and by location.
